Charles Haddon Spurgeon School To Close

After 100+ years, the school for preachers that Charles Haddon Spurgeon had started will close immediately due to lack of financial support and attendance. It became unsustainable and I can identify with that decision.

Spurgeon is known as the "prince of preachers" because of his approach to preaching "Jesus Christ and Him crucified."

His sermons were strong in the convicting power of the Holy Spirit. He never held an altar call after his sermons. But according to Wikipedia, he would invite anyone that was convicted of their sin after his preaching, to see him personally. He would print out tracts and encourage everyone to have "striking tracts" when you can't preach or when conversations can't be had.

His school became a place where preachers would hone their skills to properly exegete the Scriptures and maintain adherence to preaching the pure gospel message. There's been some FB comments that Spurgeon was a Calvinist but to my knowledge, I've found no evidence that Spurgeon was a Calvinist.

Records indicate that he started out as a Baptist but aside from denominationalism, which is schisms in the Body, he was true to the pure gospel message.

We're seeing an increased departure from the faith and the Scriptures as evidenced in Paul's preaching in 1 Timothy 4:1-2 and Acts 20:28-31. Paul warned that divisions and contentions would come.

Romans 16:17 (NKJV)

"Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them."

As we see solid Bible schools either close or go on the Internet to continue, we shouldn't be moved. These things were foreseen and this isn't the time to panic. While it's a shame that his school closed, we must look to the Lord and keep our eyes on Him and His Word alone.

There's other solid schools of evangelism like "Way Of The Master" and other trusted schools on evangelism.

There's three reasons why people will not share the gospel.

  1. Fear to confront sinners.

  2. Sin in your life.

  3. Lack of training in solid evangelism and Biblical teaching to refuse the argument of sinners.

We know that the coming of the Lord is near because of the increased activities of false teachers and prophets for the purpose of financial gain (see Matthew 7:15-23, 24:11). Many people are being deceived and this isn't new (see Proverbs 14:15, 30:6). The Lord warned us not to be deceived (see Matthew 24:4).

In my opinion, schools such as Spurgeon's was designed to give new preachers a Biblical foundation that never existed in false teachers. Spurgeon once said that "clowns would entertain the goats."

Today's pulpits are filled with clowns and churches are filled with people that come for the entertainment. People want to be entertained in church. Not convicted of sin by the Holy Spirit. Neither do they want to be disciplined disciple of Christ.

Luke 14:27 (NKJV)

"And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple."

Luke 9:62 (NKJV)

"But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Not every church is like this.

There's places around the world where repentant sinners come to be discipled. Where the conviction of the Holy Spirit is present. Where holiness and sanctification is present. Where the fear of the Lord and the trembling within the heart and mind at His Word, is undeniably evident.

And some of them gladly come into the ministry.

True preachers never stray from the gospel message.
