Profane & Old Wives' Myths & Idle Babblings

1 Timothy 4:7 (NKJV)

"But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness."

Fables g3454. μῦθος mythos; perhaps from the same as 3453 (through the idea of tuition); a tale, i.e. fiction (“myth”): — fable.

AV (5) - fable 5;

a speech, word, saying a narrative, story a true narrative, a fiction, a fable, an invention, a falsehood

2 Timothy 2:16 (NKJV)

"But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness."

Babblings- g2757. κενοφωνία kenophōnia; from a presumed compound of 2756 and 5456; empty sounding, i.e. fruitless discussion: — vain.

AV (2) - vain babblings 2;

empty discussion, discussion of vain and useless matters.

Some women in the church discuss profane fables or falsehood and men discuss vain and useless matters, but notice the category that the Lord puts it.

Profane.

According to (Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary) "Accordingly bebelos is that which lacks all relationship or affinity to God” (Cremer, who compares koinos, “common,” in the sense of ritual uncleanness)."

Yes, it happens in the fellowship of believers among women. Perverse and unclean discussions.

As born again believers in Christ, there's three things that we must do.

One....put to death, and two, put off, and three, put on.

Colossians 3:5-12 (NKJV) Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.

But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,

and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all."

Colossians 3:12-18 (NKJV) Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."

So when you hear yourself talk, are you inventing things and trying to sound spiritual?

And do you search the Scriptures to compare what you've said to see if it lines up with Scripture? If you don't, you're speaking profane myths or fables, which is inventing things and making it appear spiritual.

Remember, we're to test all things and abstain from all appearance of evil according to 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22, and we're to test false prophets that are antichrists according to 1 John 4:1-6.

When we fail to shun them, "they will increase unto more ungodliness."

2 Timothy 3:13 says, "Evil men and imposters will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived."

When I hear false teaching from men and women, it's a clear combination of the two.

I'm negative for a reason. I'm negative against all teaching that's against sound doctrine.

Un-sound doctrine is teaching that you haven't proven to work 100% of the time. You talk a good game, but you can't even prove it. Now I can't stop you from being self deceived. All i could do is warn you and walk away, shaking my head.

In most cases, there's no hope for certain folk that insist on this teaching of false doctrine.

Look at 2 Timothy 4:1-4 (NKJV)

"I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:

Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine,

but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables."

This combines with 1 Timothy 4:1-2 (NKJV) "Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron..."

In Miletus, Paul warned the elders that from the outside, and the inside, some will rise up as savage wolves.

Acts 20:26-31 (NKJV) "Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.

Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.

Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears."

Notice the word "perverse."

g1294. διαστρέφω diastrephō; from 1223 and 4762; to distort, i.e. (figuratively) misinterpret, or (morally) corrupt: — perverse(-rt), turn away.

AV (7) - perverse 4, pervert 2, turn away 1;

to distort, turn aside to oppose, plot against the saving purposes and plans of God,

to turn aside from the right path, to pervert, corrupt.

A person could be so nice and folksy but carry and minister a poison that's so deadly, that you don't even suspect that they would do such a thing.

Jude 1:3-4 (NKJV) "Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.

For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ."

Yes. Nice people can preach and teach so good that you believe it and then you feel a sharp pain after they've deceived you. But like most people, you ignore the pain and receive it.

They intertwine the truth with their stories to make you believe that what they’re saying is perfectly the Bible but has anyone noticed that you don’t see it demonstrated?

You try so desperately to prove what they've said and it doesn't work the way that they've taught it. Isn't it strange that you never see in real life what they've taught? Well, it shouldn't be strange because they've lied and it never happened.

Because if it happened, then why couldn't they replicate or duplicate it?

The answer is simple.

It never happened.

You sit there so convinced but you don't see it replicated.

Be not deceived.

They're peddling profane old wives' myths and vain idle babblings.

Paul's instruction is to shun them and avoid them but it's hard to throw false teaching away because it's so popular with the people. The people eat it up and swallow that camel.

They tell you that the camel tastes so good and like gullible people, you shake your head "yes," while you eat a nasty tasting camel.

If you don't teach it, you'll lose the crowd.

The Lord lost the crowd in John chapter 6, by talking about "eating flesh and drinking His blood" which He meant spiritually. Even after the Lord explained it to them plainly, they all walked away because of two things.

One "it was a hard saying" to accept, and two, they were waiting for the Lord to cook for them.

False teaching has been around since the early church and we shouldn't be surprised.

So, true shepherds are negative against all false teaching and to get the people to unlearn them is dificult. You will not stop it. Some people will shun profane old wives' myths and vain and idle babblings, some won't. I can hear it every time you open your mouth.

Some have hope, others are hopeless.
